An inspiring tale of heroism and bravery, The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico is also the heartwarming – and heartbreaking – story of friendship between two oddly kindred spirits : Philip, the lonely, disabled painter, and Frith, the shy village girl whose innocent faith in his powers to heal an injured snow goose will change her – and Philip’s – life forever.
Adapted for stage by Fabula Arts, you can see a professional theatre performance of this classic WW2 story of friendship and bravery against all odds at two local venues in November : at The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Bishops Nympton on Tuesday November 3rd and at All Saints’ Church, Dulverton on Thursday November 5th.

This piece of theatre, however, also sits at the centre of a wider community arts project around the theme of Remembrance. Funded by The Somerset Community Foundation, The Devon Community Foundation, The Dulverton Development Forum, The Elmgrant Trust and The Royal British Legion (Dulverton Branch), Fabula Arts is currently delivering Creative Arts workshops in local schools. Pupils are participating in both art and drama sessions, to explore the themes of the story, as well as gaining some background historical knowledge about this particular element of World War Two. In their art workshops, they are creating a backdrop for the performance itself, taking inspiration from the original Peter Scott drawings and real snow goose feathers from WWT Slimbridge.

Pupils will also get to watch the piece of theatre at special schools performances in Remembrance Week.
With every year that passes, we get further away from the two world wars of the twentieth century and the number of people able to share memories of these tumultuous periods of history grows fewer and fewer. As a consequence, with every year that passes, it becomes more and more challenging to engage children and young people with the idea of Remembrance and this is what this community arts project seeks to do.
We want to bring the whole community together, young and old, to contemplate Remembrance through the arts.
Come and join us at one of the two community performances. Tickets are £5 for adults and £2.50 for U16s (profits go to the churches themselves), and are available by booking online (www.fabulaarts.co.uk) or with cash on the door.
