One of the twentieth century’s most influential painters, Chaïm Soutine remains an enigmatic figure whose life has long been obscured by myth and misunderstanding. In this fascinating conversation, art historian Louise Franklin discusses her groundbreaking new book, The Life and International Legacy of a Parisian Painter, with Festival supporter and former Times Chief Art Critic Rachel Campbell-Johnston.

Drawing on extensive archival research and original fieldwork, Louise presents the first full scholarly account of Soutine’s life, challenging many of the stories that have shaped his reputation for decades. Following his journey from a small Jewish community in present-day Belarus to the artistic circles of Paris, the book explores the people, places and experiences that influenced both his remarkable paintings and his enduring international legacy.

This promises to be an illuminating author talk, with Louise and Rachel discussing the art, the history and the detective work behind the biography, revealing how fresh research can transform our understanding of one of the great painters of the twentieth century.
